FIYC 2007 CRUISE REPORT
Cruise ’07 departed for
Montauk Yacht Club (MYC) on one of those splendid days where one is
simply delighted to be out on the water. Twelve boats crossed the Long
Island Sound headed towards the Montauk Lighthouse. While underway
picnics were enjoyed and at least one kite was flown in the ideal
conditions.
Just to underscore the fact that we had traveled to another reality,
there was a steel drum band setting the tone at the MYC as we walked
off the docks. Ten of the kids quickly took the hotel shuttle into the
charming town of Montauk for some pent-up retail therapy. Other
cruisers ascended the lighthouse, bodysurfed and discovered some of the
more colorful local establishments.
Cocktails were enjoyed overlooking the water and the buffet dinner was
followed by the annual Cruise Awards. The “Spirit of the FIYC” was
awarded to the Cashel, McCance and Strupp families, each with three
generations present. Zach Calahan earned himself the “Cheeky Monkey”
award by noting, more than once, the boat speed the Commodore’s boat
was not able to achieve on the trip over. “Cruise Director’s Pets” was
handily won by Ann and David Strupp who had encouraged a marvelous
group of power boaters to join this year’s Cruise. Warning: the Long
family appears to be gearing up for the “Largest Family” award next
year! We were delighted this year that Commodore Will Fiske could
welcome former Commodores Cashel, Reed and Riegel.
Monday dawned positively stormy. All boats decided to return to Fishers
post haste. Tom Cashel was most impressive as he set off single-handed
in “Sally”, their 1941 Maine Picnic Launch. Wind speed was clocked at
32 knots and waves were 10 – 12 feet. Admittedly there were a few
reports of mal de mer upon the return. Nevertheless, everyone appears
to have seriously enjoyed this year’s adventure across the Sound.
